    6. Gir is named after Gir forest, the geographical area of origin of the breed.

Economic Survey 2020-21

  1. The state endowed with the finest drought tolerant milch breeds(Rathi, Gir, Sahiwal and Tharparkar, dual purpose breeds(Kankrej and Haryana) and the famous draft breeds of Nagori and Malvi.
  2. The state of Rajasthan is rich in livestock wealth. Rajasthan is also blessed with the best breeds of cattle, sheep and camels of the country.

Livestock Census-2019

  1. The livestock Census-2019 has placed the total livestock population of the state at 568.01 lakh and poultry birds at 146.23 lakh.
  2. The state has about 10.60% of the livestock of the country.
    1. Cattle: 7.23%
    2. Buffaloes: 12.47%
    3. Goats: 14.00%
    4. Sheep: 10.64%
  3. The state contributed 12.72% of milk and 34.46% wool to the nation’s production in the year 2017-18.
  4. The production of wool shows a modest decrease from 145 lakh kg in the year 2018-19 to 127 lakh kg in the year 2019-20.

Major initiatives taken by Animal Husbandry Department during the year 2019-20:

  1. Foot and Mouth Diseases(FMD) free Rajasthan
    1. FMD is being implemented in the State with the assistance of GOI.
    2. Mass vaccination campaigns are going on in the state for cattle and buffalo twice a year.
  1. Livestock Breeders are being benefited under Pashudhan Nishulk Arogya Yojana regularly.
    1. In the financial year 2020-21, 51.90 lakh farmers have been benefited upto December, 2020.
    2. The facility of free treatment to all livestock is available at all departmental veterinary institutions and all departmental veterinary institutions and all treatment camps organised by the department.
  1. National Livestock Mission
    1. Genetic improvement of the Goat and Sheep(GIGS) scheme has been started with the assistance of GoI:GoR with the 60:40 funding pattern.
      1. Under the scheme exhibition and training camps are organised for selection of male and female goats with preferred genetic characters.
      2. Presently the scheme is being run in AJmer, Jaipur, Sikar, Rajsamand, Chittorgarh, Churu, Sirohi and Kuchaman City(Nagour).
    2. Under Livestock Mission, Innovative Poultry Productivity Project(IPPP) has been started for Poultry Farmers.
      1. Under this project IPPP for Broiler and LIT Birds projects has been included.

Gopalan Department

  1. The aim of the Directorate of Gopalan is to act rigorously for promotion, conservation and development of the cattle population of the state including cattle reared in gaushalas of the state.
  2. Nandi Goshala Jan Sahbhagita Yojana is meant to deal with the problems for the nomad and stray male cattle population.
  3. Under Gaushala BioGas Sahbhagita Yojana, 6 Bio Gas plants in registered Gaushalas are to be established to make them self-sustainable in the field of energy.
  4. Under Gau Abhyaranya Yojana, 221.31 ha land in Bikaner is reserved for Gau Abhyaranya.
