GI is a symbol used on a commodity that has a particular geographical source and holds positions or a title that is mainly due to its place of origin.

This is the GI Symbol in India.

Trade-related aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs) is an agreement signed by WTO members, have a compulsory obligation to identify and protect GIs as Intellectual Property Rights.


Geographical Indication of Goods Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 (GI Act)

The Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 (GI Act) is a sui generis(unique type/something special ) Law by Parliament for the protection of GI products in India.
Other than those who are registered as authorised users (or those living inside the geographic territory) are not allowed to use the popular product name.
Darjeeling tea is the first GI product in India given in 2004–05.


Chakhao Black Rice from Manipur

GI tag is given to Chakhao Black Rice from Manipur.

Black Aromatic Rice locally named Chak-hao is well known for its attractive colour and aromatic flavour. It is considered as one of the richest sources of anthocyanin. Anthocyanin is found among food grain product apart from its optimal content of vitamins, minerals, fibre, proteins, and many other nutrients.
